The Colorado Street Bridge was dedicated on December 13, 1913. Designed by DeLeuw, Cather & Company, San Francisco, California. Constructed by Kiewit Pacific Company, Sante Fe Springs, California. This view is looking east in the direction of what is now the Richard H. Chambers, U.S. Court of Appeals Building, which was constructed circa 1931. Ida Longley of South Pasadena, who was a leader in the women's suffrage movement in California, is reportedly the first person to drive across this bridge in an automobile. Apparently, she informed the construction foreman that the bridge was sufficiently complete for the needs of her Sunday picnic group. Upon making this announcement, she and her entire group drove their cars over the bridge. Ida Longley was not to be denied it would seem. |
