From the shop of Jerome Thibouville-Lamy who in the mid 1800's became the sole proprietor of various factories at the famous violin-making town of Mirecourt, France. He later opened up a factory in Paris, where this violin was made. He was very successful in using machines rather than manual labor to produce his violins and other stringed instruments. Some of them were well made and some of his best independent work at Paris won awards in various countries. He often used the names of his own workmen or other made-up names on his labels. With offices in Paris and New York, he continued to expand and prosper supplying countless thousands of violins of various grades throughout the world. In 1891, his factories produced 35,000 stringed instruments in one year alone. In 1891, his cheapest non-purfled violins sold for $3.35 and his best "Virtuose" grade sold for as high as $128.00. This "Salvator" sold for $5.70 in 1891. The J.T.L. factories continued producing violins well into the 20th century - especially the "Sarasate" brand. The J.T.L. violin seen above is still posted as, more or less, a tribute to a deceased friend Terry Carroll, who did violin repairs out of his garage in Rialto. It was an old one from the 19th century .. but as always with JTLs .. it was one of many. When Terry died it was sold by his family.

The only JTL that I own is a mess (see pictures below). The top is separating and some students have treated it rough. There are some scratches .. even initials carved in the back .. typical school music program stuff. The pieces are all there. Having said that .. it is a late modern era .. circa 1920s build .. along the medio fino lines .. the thing is .. this particular instrument was very lightly and precisely crafted .. the build was nice work .. I had expectations for a nice sound .. but, so far, insufficient funds to follow through with the repairs. Sincerely, Ted Gegoux The label inside this violin says: Copie de Nicolas Amatius Cremoniea Hieroni mi filius Antoni Nepos fecit 1676 The other side has: A small (1/2 inch by 1/2 inch) paper label with a harp symbol & the letters JTL .. there is also a small five pointed star branded into the wood .. next to that label. Also inside the front block of the neck shows a JTL brand. |
